As the Christmas holiday draws near and the presents are resting quietly underneath the tree, I now have a moment to sit back and reflect on this tradition of gift giving and sharing. The past couple of years have been economically hard for most people I know and many of us have been forced to redefine our lives and seek for more meaning. I’m reminded of the movie The Homecoming: A Christmas Story, about the Walton family living during the Depression era. Though they had no money, they managed find happiness through love, hope, and resourcefulness.
Today we can buy cheap goods, but I think about what impact this demand has on the economy, the environment, and the human spirit. And I think about being happy with less and valuing what I do have, just like the Waltons. Isn’t this also the same spirit that resides in the vintage chic home?

For me, burlap is the ultimate material to represent the natural and resourceful holiday spirit. This week I’ll be spending some time with the kids, making some wonderful crafts, having some great conversations, and celebrating with vintage style! If you’re feeling the spirit too, here are some of the crafts we’ll be making. Thanks to all the lovely people who share these burlap christmas tutorials!
